Daniel Carter Beard served with distinction as the first National Scout Commissioner from 1910 to 1941. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he lived at Brooklands in Suffern, Rockland County, New York, from 1928 until his death in 1941, and his final resting place is in Rockland County at the Brick Church Cemetery in Monsey, New York. A woodsman, naturalist, illustrator, artist, and author, he founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905. On February 8, 1910, that organization merged with other boys organizations to become the Boy Scouts of America, and as one of its original founders he became known as a national figure. In his usual buckskin clothing, Uncle Dan epitomized the pioneering spirit of the Boy Scouts of America.
