Oklahoma, The Indian State
History
Land in this area was granted to Cherokee Indians by the U.S. in 1828 and was opened to White settlement in 1893. The Kaw Indian Tribal Reservation lay 5 miles east, where the land allotment of Hon. Charles Curtis, a Kaw Indian who served as Vice President of the U.S. from 1928 to 1932, was located.
