In 1889, W. R. Melton donated a one-acre tract of land at this site for the cause of religion and schools. The one-room schoolhouse located here served the Sunrise community. Zion's Hill Baptist Church, now Sunrise Baptist Church, met here from 1900 to 1909. The following year, a new school was constructed nearby.
