Watertown honored the patriotism and valor of its men who, in a time of peril, offered their lives so that the republic might live, winning the gratitude of their fellow citizens, the admiration of succeeding generations, and a place among the nation’s heroes, and it held up their example as an inspiration to heroic deeds in the future. Those named served in the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Eleventh, Fourteenth, Twentieth, Twenty Second, Twenty Third, Twenty Ninth Colored, and Thirty First regiments, the First Squadron Volunteer Cavalry, the Second Light Battery, and the First and Second regiments of Heavy Artillery.
