Mattatuck State Forest is a protected forest area in western Connecticut spread across twenty separate parcels around Waterbury, Plymouth, Thomaston, Watertown, Litchfield, and Harwinton. Rather than one continuous tract, it is best understood as a patchwork of wooded ridges, river-adjacent land, cliffs, and trails, with part of the Naugatuck River running through it. Several Blue-Blazed Trails cross the forest, including the Jericho, Hancock Brook, Whitestone Cliffs, Branch Brook, and Mattatuck trails, linking its scattered sections. Notable features include Leatherman’s Cave in Thomaston and the Whitestone climbing area. The forest preserves open land near developed towns while supporting hiking, climbing, and regional trail access.
