The Grand Rapids Public Museum, founded in 1854 as the Grand Rapids Lyceum of Natural History, is among the oldest history museums in the United States and became the first institution accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1971. Now located on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, it combines regional history, science, archives, and family attractions. Its exhibitions explore West Michigan’s Native American and immigrant histories, recreate Grand Rapids in the 1890s, and feature natural history, baseball, and a 1928 Spillman carousel. The museum also maintains archival programs and the long-preserved Voigt House Victorian Museum.
