In Grand Rapids, Michigan, this presidential museum and burial place honors Gerald Ford, the thirty-eighth president of the United States, and Betty Ford. Operated with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor as a single institution under the National Archives and Records Administration, it is unusual among presidential sites. Opened in 1981 after a major public fundraising effort, the museum presents Ford’s life, presidency, and the atmosphere of the 1970s through exhibits on his administration, national crises, diplomacy, and Betty Ford’s public role. It also serves as a civic and scholarly center and became a major place of remembrance after the deaths of Gerald and Betty Ford.
