Early citizens of Phelps organized the First Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church and built their first house of worship on this site in 1817, a wooden structure called the Yellow Meeting House. Their second church, a substantial brick edifice, was constructed here in 1856 and served the Methodist community for more than 110 years. After the Methodist and Presbyterian congregations merged to form the United Church of Phelps in 1974, the brick structure was razed in 1983, but two stained glass windows that had adorned the Methodist church narthex were relocated to the narthex of the United Church. In 1989, the village dedicated the site as Methodist Memorial Park, and the church's steeple bell stands on the park's southeast corner.
