Seneca Lake, the deepest of the eleven Finger Lakes, is 36 miles long, averages three miles wide, and reaches a depth of 618 feet at its deepest point. Because of its depth, the lake has frozen completely only four times since this region was settled. During World War II, Seneca Lake was the site of the Sampson Naval Training Center.
