Clyde Connell, an internationally known artist named for Scotland's River Clyde, was born and raised in a large household in Belcher on the Dixon Plantation, and these early life experiences were reflected in her art. A self-taught painter and sculptor, she was influenced by the art galleries in New York City and then created her work at her home on the banks of Lake Bistineau in Bossier Parish from the late 1950s until just before her death. She became known for large sculptures made from organic materials found near her lake home and from discarded pieces of farming machines. Her work was exhibited in Paris, New York City, and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, and it is also found in many private collections and public institutions including the New Orleans museum of Art and the Fort Worth Modern Museum.
