Bohm Woods is a nature preserve complex of four separately owned land parcels. Its core is the ninety-two-acre Bohm Woods Nature Preserve, owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and considered the best remaining example of mesic and dry-mesic upland forest in Madison County. The preserve was purchased from descendants of the Bohm family in 2006 after the family had protected the land from disturbance for generations. In 2018, the City of Edwardsville acquired the seventy-acre William C. Drda Woods Nature Area as a city park to provide additional buffer habitat for Bohm Woods; this land had previously been agricultural and is being reforested. Adjacent to Bohm Woods Nature Preserve are three privately owned nature preserves: the ten point three-acre William and Emma Bohm Memorial Nature Preserve, established in 1982 as the first privately owned nature preserve in Illinois; the six point one four-acre E. Dora Bohm Memorial Nature Preserve, established in 1995; and the five-acre buffer preserve called Toadwood Scrubs, added in 1996. Bohm Woods Nature Preserve and William C. Drda Woods Nature Area are open to the public, while the William and Emma Bohm, E. Dora Bohm, and Toadwood Scrubs preserves are private property.
