Liberty City is a historic rural community in oil-rich Gregg County that was settled before the Civil War. It has also been known as Sabine, Mount Moriah, McCary's Chapel, Goforth, and Hog Eye, a name linked to an early settler with an "eye" for hogs. Its present name was adopted in the early days of the famous East Texas oil boom. The area is served by the Sabine School district, established in 1893, and is crossed by a great system of improved, all-weather county roads regarded as the finest in the state. It is a center of farming and livestock raising and has fine churches, a park, and community meeting places.
