In 1775 the building on the adjacent ground was used as a store. After the fall of Charles Town in 1780, the British seized the store, fortified it, and established the Post at the Congarees. On February 19, 1781, General Sumter attacked it, and on the 21st destroyed the magazine and supplies in sight of Rawdon's army across the river after Rawdon had come from Camden to relieve the post. It was captured by Lee on May 15, 1781, reoccupied by Rawdon on July 1, 1781, and reoccupied by Greene on July 4, 1781.
