Bishop Jackson Kemper lived on these premises from 1846 to 1870. He served as Missionary Bishop of the American Episcopal Church from 1835 to 1859, inspired the founding of Nashotah House in 1842, and was Bishop of Wisconsin from 1854 to 1870. Facing countless frontier hardships, he traveled widely through the Middle West, confirmed thousands, planted missions and churches, created six dioceses in six states, and became known as one of Wisconsin’s brightest names.
