One of Ohio's finest examples of prehistoric Indian petroglyphs is carved into an exposed portion of black Hand Sandstone bedrock in east-central Ohio. The figures' meaning cannot be determined, but they are thought to be either tribal symbols or depictions of activities in the history of the Indian group. Recognizable inscriptions include at least a fish, a bird, an unidentified animal, three human feet, and a human head or face adorned with a headdress. The style of the figures suggests they were probably carved by the late prehistoric Fort Ancient Indians, who lived in southern Ohio approximately 700 years ago.
