On April 17, 1805, near Lewis and Clark State Park, William Clark wrote of great numbers of wildlife on the plains, including buffalo, small parties of antelopes, large herds of elk, white wolves, and in a pond swan, geese, and different kinds of ducks. Days later, as the party neared the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, Lewis used the words spectacular and immense for much the same scene. Bald eagles, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, muskrat, and beaver were also recorded during this time, and the especially plentiful beaver became a favorite meal of the men. Today, Lewis and Clark State Park and northwest North Dakota still offer glimpses of many of the same animals encountered by the Corps of Discovery.
