Verendrye National Monument was a former national monument in western North Dakota, on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, created in 1917 around Crow Flies High Butte and protected until 1956. It honored the explorations of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye, and his sons in the upper Missouri country, including journeys in 1738 and 1742 that may have brought them to the Rocky Mountains before Lewis and Clark. Crow Flies High Butte was long identified as their 1742–43 lookout, but doubts about their route led to the monument’s removal. Later research revived the possibility that the butte had been correctly identified.
