Powderhouse Hill in South Berwick, Maine, is a small town-owned ski area run by the volunteer Powderhouse Ski Club, with a rope tow and three trails. Its name reflects older local history: the land belonged to Thomas and Elizabeth Butler, who settled there in 1698, and after a powder house was built on Butler Hill when Berwick, North Berwick, and South Berwick were one town, the hill became known as Powderhouse Hill. Skiing began there under William Hardy and his family, who operated the tow and refreshments. Incorporated in 1964, the club has helped sustain one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating ski areas.
