Nature
Vaughan Woods State Park lies on the western edge of South Berwick, Maine, along the Salmon Falls River at the New Hampshire border. It is a public recreation area that brings together riverfront scenery, old-growth forest, and a protected natural and historic landscape. Elizabeth Vaughan bequeathed the land to the state in 1949. The park includes the restored Hamilton House, stands of old-growth woods, and about 3 miles of hiking trails. It remains significant as a Maine state park where historic preservation, quiet walking routes, and the setting of woods and river are closely linked.
