On February 1, 2003, the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107—Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Michael P. Anderson, Laurel B. Clark, and Ilan Ramon—gave their lives in their final mission to benefit mankind. Their loss also brought attention to the sacrifices made by the NASA crew and their families, as well as the unity, dignity, and compassion that Sabine County quietly offered the world, summed up in the words, “Their mission became our mission.”
