On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated in the skies over Texas and came to rest in Sabine County. Charles Krenek and Jules “Buzz” Mier, Jr. gave their lives on March 27, 2003, in their efforts to help recover Columbia and her crew, and their sacrifice stood among those made by the volunteers.
