Hanover Square reflects Brunswick's Victorian-era prosperity and civic pride, with efforts to beautify it beginning in 1882 when the Ladies Park Association persuaded the city to fence the square's new gardens against roaming cattle, hogs, and horses. In 1884, the local newspaper praised the association for making the square "an ornament for the city." A decorative iron fence enclosed the square until 1951, and sections of the original panels were later restored and returned to its perimeter, including an area on the western side where a red cedar tree had grown into the fencing. In 2006, Signature Squares of Brunswick, in partnership with the City of Brunswick, restored Hanover Square using design elements and plant selections associated with the 1880s-1890s, Brunswick's first golden era. The project excavated and replaced the broken brick walkways, preserving their slightly arched profile and traditional construction with most bricks set directly on soil as in the 19th century. The fountain was dismantled to bare soil, rebuilt on a steel-reinforced poured concrete base, finished with stucco walls to re-create its 1884 appearance, and fitted with a new cast iron fountain head before the renovated square reopened on July 4, 2006. The restored garden was planted to reflect 19th-century aesthetics, with palms, live oaks, crinum lilies, and a collection of 31 hardy antique roses continuing a tradition of roses in Hanover Square that has lasted for more than a century.
