John K. Cullin erected the Hillsdale Soldiers and Sailors Monument in memory of the soldiers and sailors who defended the country and flag from 1861 to 1865. Its lower plaque names Hillsdale comrades who served in the 14th, 44th, 128th, 12th Cavalry, 4th Cavalry, 159th, 10th, 175th, 81st, 18th, 156th, 167th, 25th, and 15th regiments; the 49th and 34th Massachusetts regiments; the 1st Connecticut Battery; the 24 Sharpshooters; the 17th U.S. Infantry; the U.S. Regulars; and the U.S. Navy.
