In honor of the sons and daughters of Moore County who served their country in war and peace, special remembrance is given to those who gave their lives in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. The memorial invokes the words “The last full measure of devotion” from the Gettysburg Address and the inscription “We cannot forget, we must not forget, we dare not forget,” inspired by Truman Ashby of Lynchburg. It explains that the broken column represents those who have fallen and the breaking of earthly ties with them, while the massive cube of granite represents the strength required of those who remain to endure the loss of loved ones. Their names are held as forever engraved and remembered with the prayer that no others will ever need to be added.
