Willow Springs was visited by Padre Garces in 1776 while he followed the Old Horse Thief Trace, later known as the Joe Walker Trail. Fremont stopped here in 1844. In 1850, the famished Jayhawk Party found water here while struggling from Death Valley to Los Angeles. It later became a station on the Los Angeles-Havilah and Inyo Stage Lines.
