In the 19th century, cowboys tried to measure these lakes by tying lariats together, found no bottom, and called them “bottomless.” These lakes are now known to be sinkholes formed by collapsed salt and gypsum deposits, ranging from 17 to 90 feet deep. The park was established in 1933 as New Mexico's first state park.
