The Twin Cities Rapid Transit Company extended its streetcar lines to Excelsior in 1905 and launched six seventy-foot steamboats on Lake Minnetonka in 1906 to transport lake residents and tourists. Styled after streetcars and named for stops on the trolley route—Como, Harriet, Hopkins, Minnehaha, Stillwater, and White Bear—these boats could carry more than 150 people, and an estimated 12,000 people rode the streetcars to Excelsior on summer holidays. Use of the boats ended in 1925, and most were scuttled to the bottom in 1926. The Minnehaha was found on the lake bottom in 1979, raised in 1980, restored by 1996, and returned to service carrying paying customers on lake tours. It is now owned by the Museum of Lake Minnetonka and is available for charters.
