In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the International Convention of Lions Clubs to become “Knights of the Blind” and make the lives of blind people more worthwhile by giving them the joy of normal activity. Under the Blind Campers program, the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club brings visually impaired children to the area to experience Garrett County’s recreational opportunities. Campers, their families, and school counselors camp in tents, water ski and tube, go on hikes, participate in art activities, and ride attractions such as the Mountain Coaster and go carts. Local businesses support the program by donating meals, event passes, and other services, while high school volunteers, Boy Scout troops, and club members help with camping, serve as sighted guides, volunteer boats for time on the lake, stay at the campsite, and host a cookout where campers share their experiences. The program helps campers build confidence and self-esteem through activities that may otherwise be inaccessible and also provides respite for attending family members.
