Deep Creek Lake is central to Garrett County’s reputation as an all-season destination, drawing day-trippers, families, groups of friends staying for several days, and second-home owners who visit frequently. A 2020 study estimated about 1.4 million visitors per year to the county, with Wisp Ski Resort also serving as a major attraction. Most visitors come from Maryland and nearby states, especially from the metropolitan areas of Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington D.C., including northern Virginia. Surveys show strong interest in a scenic, relaxing environment with a variety of outdoor activities, including boating, fishing, camping, and hiking on and around the lake. Boating ranges from leisure cruising to water sports such as skiing, boarding, and wake surfing, while downstream from the dam on the Youghiogheny River, whitewater rafting and trout fly fishing are supported by water releases from the Deep Creek Dam. Visitors and second-home owners contribute significantly to the local economy through spending, property taxes, and support for businesses and services throughout Garrett County. The same 2020 study estimated annual visitor spending at roughly $315 million and a total economic contribution of roughly $360 million once indirect effects such as job creation are included.
