The Old Post Office served as a post office from 1913 to 1967 and as a U.S. federal building from 1967 to 1996. In 1997, the town of Bennington acquired it from the federal government through the General Services Administration under the Historic Surplus Property Program, a program of the National Park Service. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
