Education
IslandWood is a nonprofit environmental education organization based on a roughly 250-acre Bainbridge Island campus and serving communities across the central Puget Sound region and online. It grew from a 1997 local effort to preserve south Bainbridge land and create a children’s outdoor education center after a study found many students lacked access to overnight outdoor learning. Founded in 2000 after Debbi and Paul Brainerd bought 255 acres, it is best known for its overnight school program for fourth- through sixth-grade students. It also offers a graduate residency with the University of Washington and urban programs that connect ecology, community, and justice-oriented teaching.
