Funded by Nettie Fowler McCormick and designed by Louis H. Sullivan, Virginia Hall was originally built as a women's dormitory and became Tusculum's first modern building, with baths, fire escapes, and furnace heat. The building originally housed the Home Economics Department, a dining hall, girls' gymnasium, parlors and reception rooms, as well as an art studio.
