Forestville Mystery Cave State Park
Nature
Forestville Mystery Cave State Park in southeastern Minnesota combines two rare attractions: Historic Forestville, a restored nineteenth-century village, and Mystery Cave, the state’s longest cave. The park lies in karst country shaped over hundreds of millions of years, with limestone later dissolved by water into caves, sinkholes, and cold streams. Mystery Cave stretches more than thirteen miles through two rock layers and contains stalactites, stalagmites, pools, and a constant cool temperature. Above ground, Forestville preserves a former rural trade center that declined after the railroad bypassed it in 1868 and is now interpreted as village life in 1899.
