Saints Rest stands at this site as one of the three oldest remaining houses in Sewanee. It was erected in 1870 by Charlotte Bull Barnwell Elliott, widow of Stephen Elliott, a founding Episcopal bishop from Georgia, and formed part of the postwar revival of the University. A pre-Civil War cabin on this site had served as the writing studio of Sarah Barnwell Elliott, a Tennessee suffragist. Saints Rest echoes the name of Rebel's Rest, which stood north of this site from 1866 to 2014, and the neighboring cottage, Sinners Hope, reflects the delight in house naming among Sewanee residents.
