Leonard Harrison State Park occupies 585 acres on the east rim of Pine Creek Gorge, an 800-foot-deep, nearly 4,000-foot-wide landscape widely known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Shaped by Pine Creek through ancient rock formations, the gorge long served as a travel corridor for Native Americans, lumbermen, and a railroad before becoming home to the Pine Creek Rail Trail. The surrounding forest was heavily clearcut in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but Leonard Harrison donated this land to Pennsylvania in 1922, and Civilian Conservation Corps work in the 1930s helped restore it. Today the park is valued for scenic overlooks, outdoor recreation, and its protected natural setting.
