Indians called Pine Creek “Tiadaghton,” meaning river of pines. Those pines, now gone, brought drastic changes to the creek. Logging began in the 1800s, and before it, thick soil held rainwater like a sponge and released it slowly, keeping Pine Creek high enough for canoeing all summer. Today water runs off much more quickly, carrying soil with it, and by August the creek is rock-strewn. Pine Creek still retains much of its wilderness spirit and remains a path into the wilderness, especially in the spring by raft or canoe.
