About one half a mile southwest of this spot, on the high bluff above the river, stood the stockade known as Antes Fort, erected by Lieut. Col. John Henry Antes in the summer of 1777. The fort was an important rallying point for settlers in this region. It was destroyed by Indians and Tories in July 1778, during the Big Runaway, when the entire valley was abandoned by white settlers. During the Indian raids in this region, those who lost their lives included Zephaniah Miller, Robert Fleming, Abel Cady, Robert Donaldson, James Armstrong, James McMichael, and Issac Bouser, at Fort Antes in July 1777 and at Fort Horn in July 1778.
