Erie National Wildlife Refuge, established on May 22, 1959, protects 8,777 acres in northwestern Pennsylvania as habitat for waterfowl, migratory birds, and other wildlife. Named after the Erie tribe, it was created with Duck Stamp funds and consists of the Sugar Lake and Seneca divisions, whose wetlands, creeks, forests, grasslands, and croplands support exceptional biodiversity. Recognized as an Important Bird Area, it attracts about 237 bird species and also shelters many fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and endangered mussels. Active management of water levels, grasslands, fire, and farming helps sustain these habitats, while trails, fishing access, and a visitor center make the refuge accessible to the public.
