Near New Richmond in northwestern Pennsylvania, John Brown lived from 1825 to 1835 on a farm with a tannery he built near the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. The site’s surviving focus is the tannery ruins. During Brown’s time there, the farm and tannery also served as an important stop on the Underground Railway, with a hidden room in the barn sheltering people escaping slavery; Brown is said to have helped about 2,500 enslaved people in this period. The property also includes graves of Brown’s first wife Dianthe and two sons. Later reused industrially, the tannery burned in 1907, and the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
