Spring Meadow Lake State Park, just west of Helena, Montana, transformed a former gravel pit and factory site into a 61-acre public recreation area centered on a 30-acre man-made, spring-fed lake. The lake supports swimming, fishing, non-motorized boating, scuba diving, ice fishing, and ice skating, making the park a year-round destination close to the city. A one-mile trail circles the water, and picnicking is a major warm-weather attraction. Anglers seek largemouth bass, westslope cutthroat trout, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed, and a fishing pier added in 2011 broadened access. The park’s significance lies in its conversion from industrial land to accessible outdoor use.
