James Bond came with his family to Haywood Co. from Bertie Co., North Carolina in 1836, following his uncle Thomas Bond. Through cultivation of the soil, he built one of the greatest fortunes in Tennessee and owned 35,400 acres. A great pioneer of Haywood Co. and its largest taxpayer, he showed generosity in support of the county's progress by giving land for the Brownsville Baptist Female College in 1850 and the Brownsville Baptist Church in 1870. Along West Main Street, the architectural beauty of the homes of his heirs reflects his heritage. Bond and many of his descendants are buried in the James Bond Cemetery.
