Graham Mountain
Nature
Graham Mountain, a 3,868-foot Catskill High Peak in Hardenburgh, New York, is notable as the highest privately owned mountain in the range and for the unusual fact that its summit and normal ascent route lie on private land within Catskill Park. Its summit supports an uncommon pygmy hardwood forest rather than the boreal evergreens typical of similar elevations, a condition linked by forest historian Michael Kudish to long-term ecological change over about 8,500 years. Human impact remained limited until the late 19th century, then included logging and a television relay station built in the early 1960s. Once prized by peakbaggers, the summit was closed to the public indefinitely in January 2021.
