Northcentral Pennsylvania's Lumber Heritage Region combines deep forests, navigable rivers, abundant wildlife, historic communities, and outdoor recreation across roughly two million acres of public lands. For thousands of years, these natural assets drew people to the region, and in the 1800s settlers discovered its wealth of timber, oil, and coal, helping vibrant communities take root from Williamsport to Clarion and from Bradford to Boalsburg. The region's rivers and forests were central to its logging past, from immense log drives on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River to logging railroads and places such as Cross Fork, which in 1897 was reported to be third in lumber production in Pennsylvania before becoming a ghost town by 1920. Today, elk, black bear, fisher, otter, deer, and bald eagle find refuge in its forested hills and river valleys, while visitors fish, hike, bike, travel scenic byways, explore museums and festivals, and experience both the history and continuing value of sustainable forestry and wood products.
