Tannehill Furnaces began as a small forge in 1830. During the War Between the States from 1861 to 1865, these furnaces were a major supplier of iron and munitions for the Confederacy. When Union troops partially destroyed them on March 31, 1865, they were producing more than 20 tons of pig iron daily for the arsenal at Selma.
