Tannehill Ironworks in Alabama preserves the ruins of a major 19th-century ironmaking complex that began in 1830 and expanded greatly between 1859 and 1862 under Moses Stroup. With three charcoal blast furnaces producing pig iron for the Naval Gun Works and Arsenal at Selma, plus a foundry casting kettles and hollow-ware for southern troops, it became an important Civil War supplier until U.S. cavalry burned the furnaces and foundry on March 31, 1865. The site also influenced Alabama’s later iron and steel development through an 1862 experiment with red iron ore and remains one of the South’s best-preserved iron furnace sites.
