In 1972 Al and Georgia Morris moved to Pickens, South Carolina, with their 1-year-old daughter so Al could become a pharmacist at the Corner Drug Store, a small-town pharmacy. Soon after, a son completed their family, and Al had the opportunity to purchase the store. The Morris family put down roots in Pickens, and the Corner Drug Store remained a family pharmacy through the years. When Al retired in 2018, his son Todd Morris became the pharmacist and owner, and Al’s daughter Amy Morris continued to work there. As painting began in 2022, Georgia Morris suddenly passed away, making the project especially poignant for the family. They embraced the chance to support local art, show hometown pride, and contribute to the design personally. The quilt panel was based on a quilt made by Georgia Morris’s great-great Aunt Cassie around 1930 using childhood clothing remnants from her mother and two aunts. Only small pieces of the original quilt remain, and photographs suggested it once had a border. A navy and yellow Morris tartan and parts of a treasured antique Japanese kimono were also included in the kites as family heirloom memories.
