Glassy Mountain, a 1,703-foot monadnock near Pickens in northwestern South Carolina, stands close enough to the Blue Ridge to offer broad views that can include Table Rock, Caesar’s Head, and Greenville. Its name comes from the bare granite face on its north side, where small springs wet the rock so that sunlight can make it appear glassy. A service road to transmitter towers makes the summit relatively accessible, and local students have long painted graduation years in large numerals on the exposed rock. In 1990, Pat McCoy and Thomas Atkinson sold the mountain to the South Carolina Heritage Trust Program, and it became the Glass Mountain Heritage Preserve.
