Cave of the Winds is a Niagara Falls attraction on the New York side linked to Bridal Veil Falls. It began as a natural cave behind the waterfall, discovered in 1834 and opened to guided tours in 1841 by a route from Goat Island down behind the falling water. That original cave tour ended after a 1920 rock fall, and the attraction reopened in 1924 as decks and walkways in front of Bridal Veil Falls. The cave itself was destroyed by a 1954 rockfall and later dynamiting, but the name endured for the modern experience, where visitors descend by elevator to temporary redwood platforms beside powerful winds and spray.
