Turkey River Mounds State Preserve near Millville, Iowa, protects thirty-eight Native American mounds at the meeting of the Turkey and Mississippi rivers, making it one of Iowa’s notable mound sites. Built during the Woodland period, between about 500 BCE and 900 CE, the mounds served as burial and ceremonial places and include conical, linear, compound, and a single panther effigy form. Formal study began in 1885, with later surveys reflecting continued archaeological interest. Local residents bought the property in 1934 and donated it in 1940 to the Iowa Conservation Commission. It became a state preserve in 1968 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
