Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is a 30,843-acre protected area on Florida’s west coast, largely preserved in an undeveloped state. Its 23,578.93-acre wilderness makes up most of the refuge, while springs, waterways, coastal habitat, and underwater cave systems such as Buford Sink and Little Gator Siphon shape its landscape. It is especially significant as the southern wintering ground for the reintroduced eastern population of whooping cranes. Beginning in 2001, chicks raised in Wisconsin were guided there for winter, and despite heavy losses from hurricanes in 2007, the restoration effort helped establish as many as 105 migrating birds in the eastern United States by 2010.
